For oil & gas operations, Ward Leonard motors and controls deliver ruggedized performance in all kinds of conditions, all around the world. Our products have to endure temperature extremes, high shock and vibration, and abuse from crews pushing performance limits.

Our DoD process control and experience with air-cooled Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) AC motors is unique, so we really know how to maximize motor performance. Our strategic acquisition of Mawdsley’s, a major competitor in the pump market, enabled us to utilize the unique features of DoD motor design in an oil & gas drilling application: 30-year life at continuous duty, shock and vibration tested, and corona/partial discharge resistant design. As a result, motor size capability extends to 1,500 HP.

We have ATEX, CSA and UL certifications, but we also look at how and where your technology will be used.  For example, we develop Class H insulation systems with Class F heat rise — and ours are certified every three years by NAVSEA, the DoD authority. They are fully taped and Vacuum Pressure Injected with epoxy to meet military standards for performance under submersion. We also build to defeat specific threats to your equipment: we’ve created vermin-resistant insulation for cold climates and ant-resistant insulation for the Brazilian jungles.

You’ll find military reliability in our 2-seal system design for bearings in harsh environments. Ward Leonard uses both inboard and outboard seals on the drive and non-drive side of vertical motors, where others may just seal the drive end or only use outboard seals.

No matter what type of shaft you need, we manufacture it, including custom ends with certifications.  We also take a tougher stand on materials, working with nodular cast iron and Monel to deliver low-temperature and high-shock reliability.
