We Have Permission to Come Aboard.

Motors and Controls for Virtually Any Shipboard Application.

The defense of our nation, from the littorals to deep water, calls for a special kind of motor: one that that will stand up to rigors of 24/7 use, over the course of decades; the punishment of exposure to saltwater; and the rigors of combat.  Beyond durability, new design parameters are calling for motors and components that are smaller, lighter, cooler, quieter, more efficient, and just as powerful. Like the United States Navy, Ward Leonard is ready.

We’ve been serving the Navy since 1892, with a rich history of partnership and performance. We have worked closely with NAVSEA to improve control system specifications, and we are NAVSEA-approved in painting and welding. We understand Military Specifications from fore to aft, topside to bottom. We work with nodular cast iron to create the ultimate in ruggedized motors, and employ a Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) epoxy seal that delivers superior insulation and water resistance. Of course, you’d expect nothing less from a product that is engineered and built to take a torpedo hit.

When you need to get older equipment back in service quickly, Ward Leonard has the extensive engineering know-how to solve problems efficiently, combined with practical experience on hundreds of vessels. With more than 600 motors and an extensive catalogue of controls and components, we have the blueprints and the skillset to reengineer parts to OEM quality. We understand how to network complex products. For critical CASREP requirements, we respond with your sense of urgency, expediting parts through our manufacturing lines.

Unlike many vendors, Ward Leonard seeks out opportunities to work one-on-one with customers for unique solutions. We’re a nimble company, without a huge bureaucracy, so we’re able to respond more quickly and creatively. We are willing to work with tougher materials, such as nodular cast iron and Monel. Furthermore, our investment in sophisticated software tools, such as Solidworks, CAD, Ansoft Designer® 6.0 technology and Finite Element Analysis, gives us the power to explore new possibilities right at the design stage. We’re able to meet ever-tougher Mil Spec—and your unique specs.

Ward Leonard has a long history of bringing products to tough Mil Specs. For example, our motors are designed to meet MIL-M17060 and MIL-17059. Our motor controls meet MIL-DTL 22123 and our automatic bus switches meet MIL PRF-17773. We not only meet NAVSEA spec for welding—we send our welders to learn NAVSEA techniques. As the DoD sets even more demanding requirements for low noise, tighter tolerances and electromagnetic interference standards, Ward Leonard is uniquely qualified to achieve them. See our Mil-Standard Qualifications.

On the Gerald R. Ford Class aircraft carrier, the DDG-1000 destroyer, the Littoral Combat Ship and hundreds of other applications, Ward Leonard has a proven history of service with the Navy. We have more than 600 motors in our portfolio, for virtually every shipboard application. This includes technologies from strategic acquisitions, such as GE Mil Spec Motors and Tech Systems. As a result, we have the blueprints, specs and experience to refurbish products to OEM condition.

On the new CVN-78 Aircraft Carrier (Gerald Ford Class), you’ll find Ward Leonard N302 relays, fiber-optically interfaced, with communications and control capabilities, overload features and protocols. They enable one sailor to operate 20 controllers, for enhanced capability and manforce reduction. Three factors make us a strong partner for new-build programs: Our depth of DoD experience, our systems integration expertise and our willingness to work one-on-one with customers to meet exact requirements.
