Keeping Systems Running Smoothly.

Our Strategic Acquisitions Provide
a Blueprint for Success.

When equipment needs refurbishing, Ward Leonard is uniquely qualified to restore it to OEM condition. As part of our plan to be the single best resource for specialty motors and controls for military and industrial markets, we have made strategic acquisitions, including:

Mawdsley’s, a major competitor for U.S. Navy business and a strategic presence in the oil & gas drilling markets. Mawdsley’s offered a strong position in the pump market and very competitive pricing. With this acquisition, Ward Leonard expanded, utilizing the unique features of DoD motor design for industrial applications: 30-year life at continuous duty, shock and vibration tested, and corona/partial discharge resistant design. As a result, motor size capability extends to 1,500 HP.

Tech Systems motor and genset capability, complementing the Ward Leonard product line to create packaged solutions, not just component sales. For example, we paired our regulators for the aircraft carrier fleet with the Tech Systems genset.
Tech Systems acquired the license to produce GE DoD motors in the early 1990’s, which transitioned to Ward Leonard with our purchase. The Tech Systems motors are a “bar rotor” design, while the GE designs feature cast rotors, allowing for motor manufacturing capability to 300 HP.

JH Smith Lighting Corp., manufacturers of incandescent and LED Dualamp indicator lights for motor control centers and switchboxes for shipboard telecom switchboxes. Ward Leonard acquired JH Smith to augment its vertical integration on control systems, streamlining lead times and enhancing cost control.

GE DoD controls product line, augmenting an already strong position in the U.S. Navy shipboard controls market.

Electrodynamics (EDY) division of Electric Boat for the manufacture of low-noise motors for the Ohio and Los Angeles class of submarines, as well as the designs for motors used on the Seawolf submarine.

By adding these lines to our already impressive array of motors, we’re able to offer our customers greater variety and increased innovation through shared technologies. We not only have the blueprints, documentation and skill set to refurbish these units as new; we also have the knowledge and electromechanical capabilities to meet new performance demands.
